Friars Mission Center

Friars Mission Center

Located in the heart of San Diego's most densely populated area, Friars Mission Center stands as a significant landmark amidst a high-rise office market. This historic site, situated at 5604-5698 Mission Center Rd, San Diego, California 92108, offers a unique blend of commercial and cultural significance. Originally, the area was home to Mission San Diego de Alcalá, California's first mission, founded by Saint Junípero Serra in 1769. The mission was relocated to its current site in 1774 to be closer to the American Indian (Kumeyaay) villages, providing access to reliable water sources and fertile land for farming.

The mission complex, known as the Mother of the Missions, played a pivotal role in the early development of California. It was the first of a chain of 21 missions stretching northward along the coast. The mission's history is marked by significant events, including a devastating attack by local Indians in 1775, which resulted in substantial damage and the death of Padre Luis Jayme, California's first Christian martyr.

Today, while the original mission buildings have been restored and serve as an active parish for the Catholic community, the surrounding area has evolved into a bustling commercial hub. The Friars Mission Center, with its proposed retail and commercial uses, including a food market, drug store, and smaller restaurants, continues to contribute to the vibrant landscape of Mission Valley. This blend of historical significance and modern commercial activity makes Friars Mission Center a unique and dynamic property in the heart of San Diego.
